ICT AND SMART CITIES WGS MEETING: DATA LEGISLATION: IMPACT ON CITIES AND REGIONS
The upcoming joint ICT and Smart Cities WGs meeting will provide a bird’s eye view of the current EU legislation in the field of data, with a focus on the recent Data Act proposal. Two European Commission speakers will systematise existing initiatives, also in the wider context of the EU digital strategy, and showcase their impact and possible ways forward for local and regional administrations. Concrete examples of use cases with particular relevance for regions and cities will also be presented.
Background: Unveiled in February 2020, the European data strategy aims to make the EU a leader in today’s data-driven society by creating a single market for data. Among the strategy’s building blocks are common European data spaces and two major legislative initiatives: Data Governance Act agreed by co-legislators last year and the Data Act proposed by the European Commission on 23 February 2022. While all the elements are there, grasping the interlinkages between different concepts and their implications on the ground for regions and cities is key, including to support effective digital transformation.
